French elected officials call for the liberation of Ramy Shaath

Paris, June 4, 2021 - In an open letter to the Egyptian president, more than 180 and French elected officials call for the liberation of the human rights advocate Ramy Shaath, arbitrarily detained in Egypt for nearly 2 years and separated from his partner, a French citizen.

Ramy has actively defended others his entire life. Now we are there to defend him.

SPOUSE. FATHER. SON. ACTIVIST. The Egyptian-Palestinian human rights defender Ramy Shaath has spent his life supporting a politics of militant pacifism. He has played a defining role in the foundation of several political movements in Egypt and in the promotion of the BDS Movement, an international coalition for the defense for Palestinian rights.

On the night of July 5th, 2019, in front of his partner Céline, Ramy was arrested in his home in Cairo simply for having peacefully exercised his right to free expression and participation in public affairs. Céline was expulsed by force back to France the same night. Since then, Ramy’s provisory detention has been prolonged several times, resulting in months of illegal imprisonment.

10 days in Egypt…

After months of growing international mobilization, Celine was allowed to return to Egypt to see Ramy in February 2021. During her stay, she had three precious visits to the visitation room with Ramy at the infamous Torah Prison in Cairo - the first after more than a year and a half of separation. She shares some special moments from these trips below.
